MCP Connectors and the Work Between Your Apps
The practical value is not access alone. It is assembling the right context without hiding what remains unresolved.
There is a particular kind of work that happens between applications. You find a message, look up the document it refers to, check a date, and carry the details into another screen. By the time you are ready to make a decision, you have already spent your attention assembling the situation.
MCP connectors interest me because they can reduce some of that assembly work. They give an AI assistant a defined way to reach information or tools outside the conversation. The practical benefit depends on whether it can retrieve the right material and make its use of that material visible.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard for connecting AI applications with external systems. A compatible server exposes particular capabilities; the assistant’s application connects to it and can use the capabilities it supports. Those capabilities may include retrieving information or performing actions. Availability and access depend on the implementation. [2]
The standard provides a common way to connect. It does not make every integration interchangeable or grant permission to use everything in an account. The product still has to define which tools exist, who can use them, and what happens when something fails.
Imagine preparing for a partnership meeting. With suitable connectors and permissions, an assistant could find the relevant correspondence, check the calendar entry, and retrieve the proposal. The result could include links to the source material and a short account of what was agreed. That would let you spend more of the meeting preparation thinking about the partnership.
An unanswered question should remain visible. If two messages contain different times, the assistant should show the conflict. If it cannot find the proposal, it should say so. Having access to more information only helps when the system handles that information carefully.
